Spurgeon on Matthew 1:21

If you are new around here – I am a Charles Spurgeon fan! He was an English preacher and is also often referred to as the Prince of Preachers. You can find out more about Charles Spurgeon here. I have the CSB version of The Spurgeon Study Bible, and I love reading his commentary and snippets from his sermons as I read through the Bible in my study time.

She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:21 ESV

Joshua of old was a savior;

Gideon was a savior;

David was a savior;

But the title is given to our Lord above all others, because He is a Savior in a sense in which no one else is or can be. He saves His people from their sins.

The first link between my soul and Christ is not my goodness, but my badness, not my merit but my misery, not my standing but my falling, not my riches but my need.

He comes to visit His people – not to admire their beauties, but to remove their deformities, not to reward their virtues, but to forgive their sins.

– Charles Spurgeon
